The word "stitchery" is quite new, but the techniques are centuries old.
In short, Stitchery is the process of decorating fabric with thread and embroidery stitches.
Stitchery includes all types of stitches made on a background fabric, Embroidery, crewel, tenerife lace, Spanish blackwork, Swedish whitework. Hardanger, thread painting, Swedish weaving and cross stitch are just a few of the many types of embroidery. Needlepoint, petitpoint, machine embroidery, applique and smocking are also forms of stitchery.
